PAINTING
I was born and lived in Sheffield until 2001-when I moved to Eastoft, Lincolnshire.
I initially attended a two year art and design course at Granville College, gaining proficiency in multi-media, including pottery, textiles, photography and fine arts.
Artistic influences include the illustrators-Arthur Rackham, Margaret Tarrant and Edmund Dulac and the artists- Salvador Dali, Bosch and Monet.
My professional career started in 1990.after visiting the fishing port of Staithes in north Yorkshire, where I drew a series of fantasy pictures, produced later as cards and prints that sold locally and internationally (including publication in America)
Fascinated by the mystical and mythological,-‘mermaids’ (being an obsession) feature regularly in my artwork.
After the death of my father in 2005, I began oil painting on canvas (a new medium for an artist who had been used to small scale pencil drawing). This allowed me a free form of emotional expression and helped me through my grieving.
A series of sea-scapes and ‘bubble’ pictures emerged - each one surfacing a different memory, emotion or evocation of some personal experience.
I am influenced subconsciously, initially daubing swirls of paint onto the canvas and then waiting to see how they will develop into forms, shapes and images. Symbols and faces are often hidden in bubbles, water, or in rock crevices.
My viewing public love to inform me of their discoveries, saying –
“The more you look, the more you see!”
I find painting water really liberating. It can be dynamic, forceful, exultant or serene, seeming to mirror human emotions. I will eventually paint all of the elements, hopefully to discover the exciting possibilities upon my canvas, but for now feel free to lose yourself within my pictures…swim, float ,wade or row into the waterscapes and allow your own emotional stories to surface ….
